Design and Artists Copyright Society

The Design and Artists Copyright Society Limited (DACS) is a not-for-profit membership organisation.

DACS exists to protect and promote the copyright of visual creators in the UK and worldwide.

Licensing: DACS provides a copyright licensing service for copyright consumers. We act as agent on behalf of each member and respond to consumers seeking a licence for a primary use of a creative work: for example, when a publisher wants to reproduce an artistic work in a book.

Collective Administration: Licences for secondary uses of artistic works are often collectively administered under blanket licensing schemes: for example, when a business needs to photocopy pages of books or magazines. DACS negotiates a share of the revenue from these schemes and pays it back out to visual creators through our Payback campaign.

Membership Details

DACS was established by a small group of painters and sculptors. Today, we represent over 36,000 international fine artists and serve some of the biggest names in contemporary visual arts.

Our membership has changed quite significantly in recent years. We now represent a wide constituency of commercial visual creators such as photographers and illustrators who usually take care of their own primary licensing, but mandate DACS to represent their collectively administered rights through our Payback campaign. We represent 16,000 British commercial visual creators.

Becoming a member of DACS for primary licensing means you ask DACS to administer copyright on your behalf. You benefit from our professional experience, while maintaining control over the use of your work.

We charge a one-off membership fee of 25 (including VAT) and charge a commission rate of 25% from copyright revenue collected and royalty payments made.

There is no membership charge for visual creators who claim for Payback.
