2. Dance Northwest
(Performing Arts/Opera/theatre)

Dance Northwest

Dance Northwest is working with a newly devised programme aimed at supporting the artist making new work, a Strategy for Creation and Artistic Development. The programme involves the elements of:

Xtra a complimentary skills training eg. Marketing, tour booking etc,

Exploratorium - an intensive residential choreographic laboratory where choreographers apply to attend bringing with them the idea for a new piece of work and the dancers/performers required to achieve the piece. During the residential they receive access to mentors and facilitators who will give feedback and challenge their work. It is possible these mentors will come from a range of complimentary backgrounds, eg. Dance promoters rather than mentoring by a team of choreographers. The intention is to revitalise the quality of dance work by providing other perspectives on the work during the creation period.

Commissioning Three commissions are offered of 5000 each, two of which are targeted at participants of Exploratorium, a third commission is offered to NW artists via open application

Touring Triple Bill Dance Northwest endeavours to establish a touring triple bill of the three commissioned works to a minimum of 5 venues (4 regionally, 1 external to the region)

Nexus An annual networking event for North West based dancers and people who work in dance related professions.

In addition Dance Northwest overseas an African Peoples Dance Development project delivered in conjunction with Dance Initiative Greater Manchester and Merseyside Dance Initiative. The project focuses on the development of traditional African and Caribbean dance forms, providing participatory activity, professional training, performances and audience development.

Dance Northwest operates a unique model, with the four regional dance agencies: Merseyside Dance Initiative, Ludus Dance, Cheshire Dance and Dance Initiative Greater Manchester coming together as equal partners to form the National Dance Agency for the North West.

The lead officers of the four regional agencies form the 'Directorate' of Dance Northwest with the support of a full time administrator and programme manager

This model allows the agency to minimise its overheads and maximise the artistic work of the organisation.
